This one is tender. Bear with me.
We’re living in times of extreme rage, grief, anguish, horror. It’s never been more urgent that we connect to that rage in regenerative, meaningful ways. It’s never been more urgent that we channel all of our passion, our attention, our energy, our very lives to crippling and collapsing the gxnoc!dal colonial empires that are destroying us.
It makes sense for you to be feeling like “we’re witnessing and actively fighting against polycrisis. Who cares about my silly little art right now?”
“We’re watching multiple live-streamed active genocides and depths of evil and depravity that up till now have been unimaginable. What kind of monster would be experiencing joy and laughter in times like this, let alone sharing it?”
“Our ecosystems are collapsing at terrifying rates, and the Money-War machine still keeps ramping up the ante. How can I possibly show up with anything other than this fight?”
I feel that way sometimes. And I totally get why you might be too.
But I really believe, with my whole heart, that our humanity is precious and sacred, and that sharing it is generous.
Whatever beautiful form it takes.
Rage, grief, anguish, horror- yes.
But delight, creativity, love, levity, camaraderie, laughter too.
There are going to be people who disagree with me here, believing that anything other than sacred fury and fiery calls-to-arms is shifting focus, insensitive, wrong.
I completely understand why. That perspective makes total sense to me.
But I don’t think our laughter and our creativity and our silliness and our friendships and our delight is shifting focus. That’s our humanity. That’s our aliveness. That’s what we’re fighting for.
And in a world that commodifies us, homogenises us, desensitises us, and sands us down into quasi-mechanical productive automatons, I really believe sharing and celebrating our aliveness and humanity is a revolutionary act.
Sharing your art
and that pretty flower you saw
and a cool rock you found
and the laughter you share with your loved ones
and your process of recovery
and your celebrations
and your passion
and your giggles
and the meal you made that reminds you of your granddad
and yesterday’s glorious sunset
is sharing your humanity.
Your humanity is precious and sacred, and sharing it is generous.
The fullness of you is precious and sacred, and you honour us by allowing us to see it.
Your unending fury, your fierce love.
Your soul-ripping grief, your most cherished connections.
Your spat-out fire, your laughter.
Your immeasurable pain at the injustices and evil of these times, your profound gratitude to be alive.
Your heart aching disillusionment, your anchors into sanity.
Our very aliveness itself is an offering to the movement for our liberation.
Our very humanity is what we’re fighting for.
Thank you for sharing it. It helps ❤
